Last Listing description (May 2013)

This was once a workers cottage. But you can relax because all the work has now been completed, and it looks brilliant. The heritage stone and brick facade has been carefully restored and extended with some creative and functional renovations. In a pocket of architecturally designed modern houses the warmth and homeliness of this one stands out. It's situated in a quiet cul-de-sac but the heart of Fremantle's lively South Terrace cafe strip is just minutes away. There's fresh food and restaurants peppered all around, and Fremantle's famous South Beach is a mere 500m stroll downhill.

Step up onto the rustic wood deck verandah and appreciate the original Fremantle stone front wall. Seamlessly integrated heritage brick patterns border the windows and front door. There's a leafy courtyard here paved in a circular fashion with recycled bricks. This is one of three outdoor spaces with a similar theme. Around the side of the house is a massive wooden sun deck raised above more recycled brick paving in fancy arc patterns. 6 varnished doors open out the interior living area into this space. Creepers and vines surround the low maintenance garden which includes a mulberry and lemon tree. Here you can appreciate the red, green, and cream heritage colour scheme that has been carried through all of the exterior renovations. If it's too sunny for you out here wander around to the sizeable rear courtyard which spends half the day in the shade.

Expect the unexpected inside. The floor in the front of the house alternates dark and light coloured wood for something different. There are two bedrooms up front with high ceilings made from tight coil tin. One room has the original fireplace intact and you can imagine Moondyne Joe warming his hands here long ago, hiding out from Fremantle prison guards. The other room features a custom built in robe. Both have windows to the front verandah that catch the morning Sun as it diffuses through a green hedge. The master bedroom down the hall is bigger and better as you would expect. It features a customised built in robe you can almost walk into, and a full size feature wall of exposed heritage stone.

The open plan kitchen / dining / living area is big and bright. No less than 30 window panels flood it with mellow natural light. Unique building materials make it evident this renovation was a labour of love. Large wooden floor panels put a modern twist on the hand built heritage theme. The custom wooden benchtop boasts an enormous amount of space and beneath is an assortment of smart cupboards with rotating shelves that 'come to you'. One place you don't want a heritage theme is in the kitchen! Don't worry there's a whirlpool dishwasher, a Felini stove/oven (with a discreet modern extractor fan), and dual basin stainless steel sink.

Modernity is embraced in the bathroom, laundry, and toilet too. Small beige tiles with a tasteful black checker border pattern bring an overarching theme to the wet space floors. The bathroom is spacious in a modern minimalist style with the unique twist you have come to expect from this house. White floor to ceiling tiles encase the built in bath/shower. The basin is freestanding and a stone benchtop covers a hutch of pigeon hole drawers. The large mirror glass has been precision cut to accommodate the bathroom window. The toilet is also spacious with its own mini wall-mounted basin and mirror. The exposed stone and brick wall makes it a nice place to sit and ponder the antics of old Moondyne Joe.

No matter how dirty his overalls became, Joe could have got them clean in this laundry. It's built tough with a deep stainless steel sink, plenty of hard wearing bench space, and deep heavy duty drawers/cupboards. There's a wall mounted hoover dryer and room for the biggest washing machine you can find. The heritage stone and brick in this building have endured the test of time, but the opportunity to own this uniquely renovated workers cottage in South Fremantle's most sought after location will certainly not last.
