This beautiful property is steeped in history and as you wander around its glorious, abundant gardens with its towering, gnarly trees, it almost feels like everyone who has lived here and loved it has left a little piece of themselves, which has been woven together to create a truly special, creative and magical place.
The original pioneer cottage was built in 1910 and has been lovingly restored and extended with a fabulous, modern, iron-clad studio, The Red Shed , which was architecturally designed to blend new with old in a tasteful and sensitive manner. From the front, a deck wraps around an external red painted iron wall, past the treehouse and quirky bottle tree into the spacious, purpose-built artist s studio. Lofty ceilings with a central bank of electrically operable highlight windows provide superb stack ventilation. A massive picture window with banks of louvres takes in divine, elevated views of the garden at one end of the room. A split system air-conditioner and two fans keeps this room comfortable all year round while you create your next masterpiece, which you can display under the gallery downlights.
The studio leads through double timber doors into a small open study area that flows seamlessly through to the lounge room. Off to the left is the modern renovated bathroom, which has been given a complete facelift. As with this entire home, there is nothing standard or boring about this bathroom. It has beautiful windows that let you look out over the garden while you re soaking in the luxurious and enormous freestanding white bath. The semi-frameless shower is clad in rounded green pebbles and a green glass topped vanity finishes off the tranquil space.
The cottage s heritage feel has been maintained but it also enjoys many modern creature comforts, such as ducted evaporative cooling. The lounge room has high, white painted ceilings made from original pressed tin with matching pressed tin walls painted silver, and wide, polished Jarrah floorboards. The restored red brick fireplace has a two-way slow combustion stove that also warms the kitchen on the other side of the lounge room wall.
The open plan kitchen and dining room feature more of the silver pressed tin along with timber and screen cabinetry, teal laminated benchtops with a timber trim, a large freestanding ILVE 90 cm electric oven and gas cooktop. An open walk-in pantry sits adjacent to the dining area and features an antique stained glass window and unique timber shelving whose wood was sourced from the garden. The dining room has antique pendant lights, iron clad walls and a raked ceiling, and opens out through double French doors into a living sunroom where ivy climbs the walls. The sunroom references the Red Shed again with painted iron and sheer mesh screen walls that bring nature and glorious sunlight flooding inside. The dining room opens out to a huge under cover alfresco deck framed and shaded by enormous, spectacular trees and tropical plantings. Wide timber steps lead down to a circular brick paved patio with lawn, garden and orchard beyond.
The charming master bedroom has doors that open out onto the large timber deck and features an antique, hand-painted pendant; high pressed tin ceilings, built-in robes and picture rails. The other bedroom is similarly appealing with built-in robes made from mini-orb iron cladding and timber shelving, high ceilings and timber venetians on the window.
A massive shed with large swing doors and a lean-to in one corner of the block currently serves as an additional studio and laundry but could easily be used as a garage and workshop. It has power, a slow combustion stove, ample cabinetry and a sink with a cute circular stone patio to one side. A chook yard meanders down the fence line and disappears into the vegetable garden. A restored railway carriage with an attached timber porch in the front garden offers up another bedroom or more storage space.
The current owners, who have lived here for 18 years, are professional artists and gardeners and their creative influence and exuberant expression knows no bounds. The home and landscaped grounds are a living gallery. Wander past tall, sleek eucalypts; lush undergrowth, hardy succulent plantings and flourishes of art to the deep front deck laced with graceful wisteria. It s not surprising to learn this home has been part of Australia s Open Garden Scheme for a number of years, so compelling and unique is its garden. Defying categorisation, you will find a myriad species of plants here, including cacti and succulents, ornamental and edible deciduous trees*, evergreens, Australian natives, tropical and Mediterranean plantings, and a sizeable front and back lawn. Designed, planted and maintained by the hands of a skilled horticulturalist, it is little wonder that it all comes together so elegantly and seamlessly to create a captivating and comfortable space. A riot of birdsong from the garden reveals it s not only humans that are attracted to this place.
The private battle-axe block lies at the end of a long shared driveway off one of Mundaring s main streets, giving it fantastic, easy connection to the town and all its amenities, while retaining a tranquil, secluded and spacious feel. Friendly neighbours help to create a safe, communal environment.
This is, without doubt, a unique home of unparalleled beauty and mystique, which must be experienced to be believed.
