Last Listing description (December 2024)

The 1890s stone and tuckpointed brick cottage is a treasured symbol of port city architecture, and this one is an especially charming example. Hidden away in a quiet little one-way street, it couldn't be prettier: stone-walled cottage garden, iron lacework framing the north-facing veranda under the bullnose roof, and a finely restored limestone and tuckpointed brick exterior. Inside are floors of Oregon timber, large high-ceilinged rooms, lovely light from skylights above, and a delightful courtyard under colourful bougainvillea. It is very serene, but so central: walk around the corner to Wray Avenue shopping and cafes, stroll to the centre of town in minutes, or head down to the beach.Perched above the street, the home opens to an unusually long and very striking arched hallway. The fresh white interior is warmed by the natural timber of the original Oregon doors, architraves and skirtings, and the very high ceilings emphasise the sense of space. There are two generous bedrooms, both with gorgeous fireplace surrounds, and one with built-in robes. A third large room is a lovely living space (or third bedroom), with built-in shelving either side of the working fireplace. Through an Oregon door at the end of the grand hallway, the white bathroom is full of character, with storage in the old chimney breast. The home opens up to the modern kitchen/dining, framed by glass on two sides. The open flow to the courtyard is a wonderful feature, as tall jarrah and glass doors stack open to outdoor living on two levels for dining and lounging. High walls, rockeries, recycled brick paving and cascading greenery make this a relaxing space, with a handy door to the rear lane. Excellent security is also in place, with a concertina steel grille in addition to the stacking rear doors. With a security screen door at the front of the home too, you can easily open up for the sea breezes in this elevated location just two blocks up from the Fishing Boat Harbour. It is a special street with a very neighbourly community, and even a tradition of a collective long-table dinner in the lane. Street parking is restricted to residents, and the home comes with two vehicle permits, though you'll find you can just walk everywhere. You'll love the atmosphere, the sense of quiet seclusion, and the special charms of this historic cottage in a wonderfully central location.- 1890s stone and tuckpointed brick cottage, quiet one-way street- Very pretty: stone walled front garden, bullnose veranda, lacework- Elevated location two blocks from Fishing Boat Harbour- Fabulous long Oregon-floored hallway, high ceilings- Large rooms, including charming living room or 3rd bedroom- Skylights, fireplaces, built-in-robes in master bedroom- Modern open-plan kitchen/dining, doors stack open to rear courtyard- Delightful outdoor space, high walls, cascading bougainvillea- Door from courtyard to rear lane - great for unloading shopping- Excellent security, including concertina security grille at rear- Community-minded street, welcoming and friendly- Walk around the corner to Wray Ave shopping, cafes, primary school- Stroll to central Freo in minutes, close to the beach- Two street parking permits for residentsCouncil rates: $1,924.70 per annum (approx)Water rates: $1,274.70 per annum (approx)
