'Melville Park' was settled shortly after 1849 by the Flaherty family and then taken over by Alfred Moore. It was further developed by Samuel McKay, who built the homestead and barn and was known for his thoroughbred horses at Melville Park, including standing the 1898 winner of the Perth Cup, a stallion called LeVar, for three guineas!The large Edwardian/Federation styled brick and tiled homestead with extensive verandas was constructed in the 1880s.
