What about the amazing kitchen - This impressive home has a kitchen inspired by 'The Unfitted Kitchen' by Johnny Grey, the English architect, renowned for custom, handmade kitchens. He was mentored by his aunt, Elizabeth David, the doyenne of British food writers, the heart of his design being the practicalities and visual workings of the various items of kitchen furniture. Johhny Grey was an innovator in kitchen design, applying neuroscience and ergonomics. His designs aim to draw you into the space, visually and psychologically - drawing on his study of human behaviour and instincts - the desire for sanctuary and safety. To be able to see who is approaching you before they can see you.

The kitchen features 'Soft Geometry' - the use of curves linked to peripheral vision and body movement. Hence the island bench is curved to direct and reflect the flow of human movement around it and is multi-level to accommodate children and breakfast bar. The positioning of the various pieces of kitchen furniture is task sequenced, from storage to preparation to cooking, to cleaning up and putting away, as ergonomically as we could in the spaces available. Hence the extra 'preparation'sink in the island bench - theoretically at least to be used for prep only not cleaning. Furthermore Johhny applied the Alexander Technique - thus the height of the benches is higher than normal, (900mm), using the flexed elbow as the key measurement. This reduces the strain of standing, bent over as you perform various tasks - preparing vegetables etc.

The built in end grain chopping board is also his design - the end grain is much kinder on knives that will remain sharper. The owners resisted his knife slots in the board, preferring to have knives out of sight of curious toddler

The idea of the sociable kitchen has been extensively explored - the "living room in which you cook". Thus the 'driving position' faces out into the kitchen from behind the island bench. From here you also have views out into the garden - another of his innovations - the idea of linking the outdoors to the kitchen.

1 McCleery Street is a truly captivating home - we recommend an inspection to truly appreciate the many fine appointments and features of this grand property.
