Last Listing description (May 2021)

Every crown has a jewel that shines more brightly than the others. Roalston House is that jewel. A magnificent Victorian of rare classic and contemporary beauty, built in 1867 at the height of Maldon's goldfields heyday, Roalston House is an outstanding property. Privately set on a spacious 1,966 sqm block at the base of Anzac Hill and in keeping with the times, the home's stone foundations, original slate roof and triple brick exterior are all in exceptional condition. Also pristine, flagstone paved verandahs reaffirm the superior quality of workmanship undertaken in the home's construction and ongoing maintenance.

The interior is impressive, the grand hallway setting the tone. Meticulously restored and renovated, original features including soaring 14' ceilings, traditional sash windows, 12" skirting boards, stunning Baltic floorboards and era sympathetic palette merge with every modern convenience. The ambience is stylish yet warm and engaging throughout, inviting relaxed indoor/outdoor living. At the heart of the home is a light filled, free flowing living, dining and kitchen space. Awash with natural light from the gorgeous bay window with garden views, this is a space to relax and entertain in year round comfort. The entertainer's kitchen boasts sweeping bench and storage space including beautiful Jarrah timber benchtops, 6 burner commercial grade gas/electric cooker, dishwasher and enormous island bench with breakfast bar. As expected with a property of this quality, a trap door leads to a spacious, full height underfloor wine cellar/storage room. Maximising its easterly aspect, a spacious sunroom/home office/study opens through French doors to a timber deck. With its garden aspect, alfresco dining on the L-shaped, slate paved verandah is a must.

There are three queen size bedrooms each boasting a grand open fireplace with stately mantle. The family bathroom with open fireplace, free standing bath, expansive marble topped vanity with dual basins, is a private oasis to be indulged. Rarely are the words 'delight' and 'bathroom' used in the same sentence, but with its style and flair, the brilliantly designed and finished second bathroom is truly delightful.

Embracing the home, professionally landscaped gardens combine structure and free flow, with stone paths meandering between clipped hedges, flowering plants, shrubbery and stately trees including oak, olive and a majestic 100 year old Mulberry. A beautiful pond with functioning fountain is a delightful touch. Additional features include slow combustion heating, ceiling fans, European style laundry, single car garage with power, workshop facilities, ample off street parking, rainwater tank, all town services.

Discerning buyers seeking a superior quality lifestyle in a popular central Victorian town will readily appreciate Roalston House's many attributes. Maldon's school, shops, sporting facilities and services, popular walking trails and notable sites are all within easy walking distance. Major regional hubs Castlemaine (10 minutes) and Bendigo (25 minutes) are within easy reach. With Melbourne and the coast an easy 2 hour drive down the Calder Highway, this is an exciting opportunity to acquire an idyllic weekend or permanent lifestyle.

Origins and historical information

Roalston House has an important place in Maldon's rich history. Roalston House is located at the base of Anzac Hill in the heart of Maldon, a bustling goldfields town that at its mid-19th Century heyday boasted 60 hotels, 3 theatres and a skittles alley. The 1,966 sqm block of land on which the house is built was purchased on May 30, 1859 by Joseph Bell and Thomas Jameson. In 1860, Jameson sold his share to Bell who set about building what would become one of the town's most beautiful homes. True to the period, the home is built on stone foundations, with triple brick walls, slate roof and slate paved verandahs, all still in outstanding condition. In 1895, Bell sold the property to E A Dabb who, in 1897 added the home's rear section. Bell and Dabb were well known in Maldon throughout the town's 'golden days', the latter being the prominent Dabb & Co General Store now the IGA Supermarket.

While the halcyon days of the goldrush have long passed, Maldon's rich history has endured. In 1965 the National Trust of Australia declared Maldon Australia's first 'Notable Town' in acknowledgement of the town's overall historical and architecturally important buildings many of which have remained largely unchanged since the 1850s.
