Last Listing description (November 2020)

Monaghan is an exceptional lifestyle residence presenting an opportunity to own 130 years of history and one of Kyneton's original historic homes.

Built in the late Victorian period by the Wells family of Kyneton, the house is part of a historically intact streetscape containing architecturally important 19th century houses built between 1860 and 1890. Directly opposite stands the 2 storey Police Barracks c.1882 and designed in the red brick palazzo form, making this pocket one of Kyneton's most unique.

John Joseph Wells was an important identity in Kyneton's early history. One Saturday in February in 1855, Wells pitched his tent in High Street, Kyneton and opened the tent lit with two tallow candles stuck in empty brandy bottles - he took 13/6 that night in the new chemist shop. Wells continues today in the store he built prior to 1880 located in Mollison Street. In 1890, John Wells built the family home in Jennings Street and occupied the house until c.1934 when it was sold to two sisters who rented out the house for 50 years. The Shire Clerk during his tenancy there is believed to have had the first colour TV in Kyneton. The current family are the just the 3rd owners of the property.

Monaghan is an excellent example of a Victorian polychromatic brick family home. It has all the classical architectural elements associated with a home of this period, including symmetrical facade, central entrance door, bluestone foundations, tessellated tiles, verandah, hipped roof, tall chimneys, sash windows, double brick walls, Baltic Pine flooring, 3.6m ceilings, tall skirting boards, wide architraves, deep cornices and open fireplaces.

The historic interiors are calming, spacious and comfortable and comprise of the arched entry hallway, 2 large bedrooms, impressive modern bathroom, formal sitting room and dining room with French doors leading out onto a covered deck area.

The large country style kitchen is well serviced with an Ilve oven, Nectre wood heater, caesar stone bench tops and abundant storage. Beyond the kitchen there is a laundry, guest bathroom and mudroom leading to a modern architecturally designed new wing. A large master bedroom with split system and ensuite, sitting room, built in book shelves, double glazed windows and a kitchenette are all housed in this section.

The house is serviced with hydronic gas heating, roof and underfloor insulation, town water and gas and NBN.

The 950m2 allotment is equally impressive with established low maintenance front and side cottage gardens displaying flowering plants and perennials. A private side driveway leads to a garage and storage/wood shed. The open lawn area is perfect for entertaining and framed by neighbouring established English trees.

Monaghan is located in the culturally, historically and artistically rich and diverse region of the popular Macedon Ranges. A short drive away are the historic townships of Malmsbury, Glenlyon, Trentham, Woodend and Mount Macedon. Within walking distance are the well known Piper, Mollison and High Streets, abundant with art and craft galleries, cafes, restaurants, gourmet pubs, antique stores, gin distilleries, Botanical Gardens, libraries, schools and all township services.

Access to the freeway and train are minutes away - Melbourne CBD a short 1 hour drive via the Calder Highway and Tullamarine Airport 45 minutes.

Monaghan represents an affordable historic lifestyle opportunity and the perfect escape to the country.
