Last Listing description (April 2024)

6 The Outlook started its life in 1958 as a one room, pavilion style home set on a bush block of approx. 1250m2. 15 years later the same architect designed the second building to compliment the front house, joining the structures with an enclosed bridge. Built in the early 70s and inspired by the architectural ideas of the famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the new wing is built over two levels. It includes a cantilevered balcony that captures the sounds and sights of its native bushland surrounds. Both buildings exhibit remarkable hand-crafted woodwork detail and unique architectural style and are offered in mostly original condition.
The first building offers a diamond-shaped plan with an angled veranda and carport finished in Karri hardwood at each end. The minimalist design, with a low-pitched roof, comprises an open layout, It has a generous living-dining-study space, kitchen with laundry facilities and the first of the homes three bathrooms. A wide brick chimney is central to the homes design whilst bays of floor-to-ceiling windows ensure abundant natural light all year-round. The rear veranda of the original house is fully enclosed with wire mesh, creating an insect proof summer house for relaxing and dining.
Access to the second building, which compliments the angular form of the original house, is provided by an enclosed bridge off the Al Fresco room. This second building consists of two levels with a fishbone staircase and distinctive handmade light fittings creating noteworthy points of interest. Upstairs are two generous bedrooms joined by a two-way bathroom. Each has direct access to a remarkable cantilevered balcony, the perfect place to take in the birdlife and natural vegetation that abounds. Underneath this, a 2-metre plunge pool (currently securely covered and not in use) makes a pleasing addition. The accommodation is completed downstairs, this area comprises a spacious living zone, a built-in wet bar, and a convenient study area which meld effortlessly thanks to the slate floor and feature pond (not in use). There is also an additional bathroom servicing this level.

The home is perfectly positioned on a prime garden allotment of 1,250m2 (approx.) in a highly sought-after pocket known for its natural bush-like surrounds. It is in close proximity to an array of desirable amenities, including Heathmont Train Station and local buses. Several quality schools such as Aquinas College, and Tintern ELC year 12 are local. There are large shopping precincts including Eastland and Knox nearby and the Heathmont Village with its popular cafes and specialty shops. HE Parker Reserve and the Dandenong Creek Trail are within walking distance, which further extend the greenery of your surrounds. The property is also within easy access to the Eastlink M3, the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley.
Recognised as one of the most remarkable specimens of the post WW2 Wrightian style architecture in Melbourne, the property was designed by architect David Longstaff Caldwell. David was inspired by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, Japanese Architecture and the small house Walter Burley Griffin and his wife Marion Mahony Griffin designed in Heidelburg. The property has been in the one family since its inception and now offered for sale.

We donate a portion of our fee from every property transaction to the Woodards Foundation to support people experiencing homelessness, family violence and social isolation.
