Built in 1868, this unique Pioneers Settlers home was bult by George Wilkes. The home predates the suburb of Ferntree Gully by a few years & as such the original address was crown allotment #53 Burwood Road, Parish of Scoresby, County of Mornington, Victoria.
A brickmaker by trade George Wilkes handmade bricks quarried on his property that was used in the construction of many of FTGs early historical buildings such as the Royal Hotel, Club Hotel & original FTG School for which he also donated a small section of land in the south-eastern corner for FTGs first state school.
The home was originally located centrally on 249-acre dairy farm with the original boundaries being Burwood Hwy, Dorset Rd, Burke Rd & Blind Creek.
In 1880 George Pickett Snr acquired the property. He would later go on to become an elected councillor at the then newly formed Ferntree Gully Shire & founding member of the local cricket club. His son George Pickett Jnr following in his fathers footsteps would also become a local shire councillor & go on even further to become shire mayor.
In 1955 and after some 75 years in the Pickett family the property (Dairy farm) was sold & sub-divided into a housing estate & the home then only lay on 1,000sq metres of land. The home was again sub-divided in 2007 & now currently sits on 465sq metres of land.
Enduring for 154 years Picketts Cottage is the last sole surviving home from a bygone era in the Greater Knox Area, which gives it the honour of being the oldest residential house in Knox.
