FOREWORD:
THE HISTORY:
It was 1940, Eli & Rachel Krew had a vision to create their dream modernist home. A place with enduring authenticity and guided by an era in architecture that influenced countless decades and still remains one of the most inspiring periods of design history - Art Deco/Streamline Moderne. (See Image 4 for the original 1939 Architects Artist Impression of this home) Their goal: To build a proud family home that would stand the test of time and remain in the family for many years to come - and that it did. For 4 generations this home stayed within the Krew family, until it was sold to the Dell'Aera's, a loving Italian family in 1974.
THE MEMORIES:
The Italian saying, 'La Dolce Vita' meaning 'The Sweet Life' perfectly encapsulates the fond memories the Dell'Aera's shared with us. Here's a glimpse into what living here looked like:
Our home was always lively and full. Our Italian heritage with its emphasis on being the ultimate host, meant impromptu visits from family and friends were warmly welcomed. The familiar aroma of espresso coffee would fill the air and handmade cannoli sweets would be shared by all.
Summertime was joyous. Christmas roasts, playing records, hosting countless parties with friends and extended relatives. Cooking pizza's in the family-built wood-fire oven (still remains today) while the kids would play in the back-garden, climbing the huge old apricot tree, eating the most delicious apricots each season. "I had the best childhood there."
The ardent garden was a serene oasis that made you forget you lived in an inner-city streetbut just beyond our front door was an unrivalled epicurean locale. Weekends invited us to discover the sights and tastes of Lygon, Nicholson, Brunswick and Smith Street - "Let's not worry about cooking tonight, let's walk to Lygon Street for dinner."
THE HOME:
Beyond its captivating faade showcasing the signature curves, period glamour and 'Streamline Moderne' character derivative of Art Deco architecture, this 3-bedroom + study solid-brick family home is set on a mammoth 596m2 allotment in the heart of Brunswick East.
As you walk up the rounded steps and through stunning etched glass double-front doors, you'll discover a wide entrance hallway. To your right, three light filled expansive bedrooms with rich period details and soaring 3-metre high ceilings. The central bathroom takes influence from Art Deco style seen in Miami with bold colour gestures dominating. An exciting display of blush pink tiles, Italian terrazzo flooring, elaborate silver tap fixtures and a bath, separate shower + bidet.
To your left, the formal lounge. A statement elegant curved wall, original iron casement windows, solid hardwood flooring, soaring ceilings, ornate ceiling roses and friezes. The piece de resistance: An opulent gilded brass heater and mantelpiece featuring cream and brown marbled tiling in glamourous geometric shapes - all creating an indelible first impression.
As you flow on through, you'll arrive at the expansive formal dining room and beyond that into a separate retro kitchen, meals and living - a sun filled spectacle with ochre injections of colour. In the centre of this space an expressive archway.
From the casual lounge a sight for sore eyes reveals itself. Three wooden archways perfectly frame the lush green, landscaped garden and alfresco. It was always important for there to be a seamless connection between inside and the serene, leafy outdoors.
