James Long built the home in 1865, he was the owner of the original Sunshine biscuit factory across the road and had called the home Long Wood. Prior to moving into 71 Victoria Street with his wife Mary and 8 Children, James lived in a tent under Miners Rights. James was the mayor of Ballarat East, and Justice of the Peace and was also involved in the Ballarat East Orphanage for many years. James retired in Portland for his remaining years.
