York Plains was named by Governor Lochlan Macquarie in 1811. By 1815, convict James Lord amassed an area of 10,000 acres within the region including grazing rights across the plains and in 1832 built built his homestead - 'Hill House'. The Hill House Estate was subsequently subdivided and a Mr. Bo Smith acquired 179 acres in 1919 and then built 'Stonehaven' with stones and other materials sourced from a nearby colonial house in c.1920. Situated on 1.62ha. (4.02 acres), Stonehaven is structurally sold and has been meticulously restored and decorated to retain the the architectural features associated with the era including 40c. thick walls, cedar skirting boards, pressed metal ceilings, pine flooring, fireplaces, stain glass, high ceilings, fretwork and bay windows.
