Last Listing description (April 2021)

It's increasingly rare to find any residential properties for sale near Cloudy Bay Beach - this property has some very special features that make it unique.

Built in the 1980s and now offered for sale for the first time since then, 656 Cloudy Bay Road features a comfortable and secluded mudbrick and bluestone homestead on 21.6 hectares (50 acres) of mixed bushland, forest and pasture. About half the land is pasture, suitable for grazing or as a run for horses.

The property adjoins the narrow Crown reserve along the broad lower reaches of Saintys Creek, which runs from the rainforests on Mt Mangana into Cloudy Bay Lagoon.

The house was built by the owners' parents, using bluestone quarried on-site and mud bricks made there from local clay. They established the property as their family holiday home, a few minutes from Cloudy Bay Beach.

Featuring a warm gold exterior render and whitewashed inside walls with wood panelling and exposed timber beams, the home offers comfortable accommodation, with two bedrooms, a practical kitchen, simple bathroom and a cosy living room with wood heater. The mudbricks are thermally efficient, keeping the house warm in winter and cool in summer. The covered veranda looks onto the gardens, which have a number of netted and fenced beds growing flowers and vegetables. Plantings include some interesting exotic plants and trees as well as natives.

The rich variety of vegetation on the property creates a range of habitats for birds and animals. Wallabies, pademelons and echidnas are common and the birdlife is particularly abundant, with pink robins, swift parrots, masked owls and 40-spotted pardalotes among the rare species that can be observed.

From the house, a track beneath the forest canopy leads down to the edge of Saintys Creek, where the owner's kayak is pulled up on the bank. The clear, wide stream makes this a great swimming spot in warm weather and it's a delightful paddle downstream into Cloudy Bay Lagoon to hook some flathead or upstream to observe water birds.

Nearby is a separate one-room cabin, useful as extra accommodation for visitors. Tracks lead down from the cabin to the creek and through tall groves of melaleuca, alive with birds.

This property offers a unique combination of appealing features - a charming dwelling and separate cabin, hidden away among trees and gardens; a substantial parcel of land with cleared pasture and a beautiful natural environment; proximity to the famous surf beaches of Cloudy Bay; all this plus virtual private waterfrontage on a pristine waterway for swimming or kayaking.

656 Cloudy Bay Road will attract wide interest.
