Last Listing description (November 2012)

Flimby Sorell
The original farm associated with this Georgian property was the subject of one of the earliest property grants in the Pitt Water, later called Sorell, district after European settlement and was granted to Thomas Prestage and others after they had relocated from Norfolk Island.
By 1824 it and surrounding land was purchased by John and Elizabeth Allanby who came to Van Diemen???s Land from England and named the property Flimby Park after their English parish.

Over many years the property changed hands until around 1981 the house with a couple of acres was sold to Geoff Downie, a Hobart architect, who with his wife restored the house to its current form.
The Vendors have owned the property for the past 11 years and have embarked on a labor of love ensuring that the house has been maintained and improved whilst cultivating the beautiful traditional gardens around it.
Located near Iron Creek and set in a picturesque valley the fine Georgian home is surrounded by a canopy of majestic English trees including Oaks, Elms, Beeches, Alders, Ashes and Walnut trees, along with fruit trees, vegetable and flower gardens.
An annual allocation of river water pumped from the creek ensures the garden is well watered.
The garden is enhanced by secret chambers, patios, lawns and winding paths.
A sympathetic double garage with vaulted ceiling studio or rumpus room is located to the rear of the house and is connected via a courtyard garden.
Solid brick construction was aided by the local manufacture of the bricks employing convict labor in a clay pit nearby.
The broad veranda shelters 3 sides of the dwelling and forms a grand entry to the house.
So much of the original house has been preserved including magnificent large colonial cedar windows, fire surrounds, skirts and architraves; along with the 6 fireplaces, hardwood flooring and the impressive door locks.
Accommodation is generous and includes a formal entry hall, sitting room with a Jetmaster wood heater, dining room with a Jotul wood heater, sun room, Huon pine fitted kitchen, study, 4 bedrooms and 2 bathooms.
The house exudes a warm and cosy atmosphere enhanced by wood and electric heating, quality wool carpets and insulation.
The property is reached by a long private driveway at the end of a no through road ensuring total peace and privacy.
However all shopping and facilities are a couple of kilometers away in thriving Sorell which itself is a mere 10 minutes from the Hobart airport and a scenic 20 minute drive to Hobart City.
