Last Listing description (April 2019)

There's an echo of history on the facade of this lovely home on the shores of the D'Entrecasteaux Channel at the end of Gemalla Road in Margate - in the right light, you can just make out the shadowed words TASMANIAN FISH CANNERY PTY LTD.
Originally the meeting hall and lunchroom of this pioneer seafood industry business, the building dates back to 1947 - an apprentice carpenter signed his name and the date on one of the rafters.
It was later loaned by the cannery to local community groups - through the 1950s, Girl Guides gathered there for meetings and Sea Scouts launched their sailing dinghies and rowing skiffs from the slipway in front of the house. (The slipway's remains are still there - a new owner might want to restore it or even construct the pontoon jetty, as yet unbuilt, but with previous Council approvals in place.)

The building was sold as a dwelling in the early 1960s and was bought by the family of the present owners in 1967. In the half-century since, it has been a much-loved home and haven for many family members and their friends.
Perched safely above the water on the crest of a five-metre rise, the house is surprisingly private and secluded. Mature eucalypts frame the outlook over the jetty, with fishing boats and cruising yachts at the pier or on their moorings in the bay. A deep-water mooring in front of the house is included in the sale.
Recent renovations have created a stylish, comfortable and contemporary two-storey seaside residence, full of sunshine and light, with spacious rooms, high ceilings and massive windows capturing the wonderful water views across the Channel towards Coningham and North Bruny.
Downstairs, the Gemalla Road entrance of the house opens to the polished hardwood floors of an entrance hall. Off one side of the hall is the main bathroom with modern claw-foot bath and underfloor heating. Adjacent is a separate toilet and the laundry.
From the other side of the hall, the large carpeted master bedroom opens through full-height glass doors to a deck running across the front of the house. Glass panelled doors lead through to a carpeted lounge room, the first of two expansive downstairs living spaces. Identical doors give access to the equally spacious living/dining area, with large areas of double-glazing to make the most of the views. Electronic blinds in these downstairs rooms control brightness and give privacy.
Polished hardwood floors in the living/dining area flow through to the bright, modern kitchen, which features quality appliances. Off the kitchen, the timber floors continue through to the hallway and the stairs, which rise in three flights to the upper level of the home.
This self-contained area includes a bedroom, living area and ensuite bathroom. The living space opens to a large ceramic-tiled balcony, which wraps around two sides of the area, creating the perfect place for an early morning coffee or a sundowner in the evening.
To complete a very appealing package, next to the house there's a large separate garage/workshop and an adjoining concrete-floored storage shed, both with electricity connected.
Properties of this style and quality, with privacy, water views and waterfrontage within a short distance of the city, are very hard to find. This one is unique for many reasons and it deserves your inspection.
