Nestled on the banks of York Cove, Thelmara Cottage is believed to have been built around 1860, however its design suggests it may be older.
The land was originally granted to Major Stewart, being in a prime location next to the Government Store, blacksmiths, nailmakers and a lumber yard.
During the 1870's it was occupied by Capt. Sturdee, master of the Eastern Extension Cable Co's maintenance ship. The Co. operated the cable link with mainland Australia.
