Last Listing description (June 2015)
- A sandstone homestead in a secluded location overlooking the South Esk River
- Increased arable farming area
- Increased availability to irrigation water
'Rostrevor' enjoys 7km of double frontage to the South Esk River in the Fingal Valley.
Today, income is generated from second cross prime lamb production, dry land and irrigated cropping enterprises. New pastures have been established following the extensive cropping of barley, oats, wheat, grass seed, poppies and canola. The South Esk river provides 'direct take' to Pivot with Centerliner and hard hose irrigation systems utilising water stored on farm from the Rostrevor Rivulet.
TERRAIN
Arable land stretches out from both sides of the South Esk River and rises gently into hillside grazing country. A portion of this ground has been identified for its unique vegetation and is registered under a Private Forest Conservation Fund (established May 2010).
LAND DESCRIPTION
There are 892 recently renovated or cropped hectares included in a total paddock area of 1,170 hectares. A private forest conservation reserve includes 1,593 hectares whilst other native forest and bush amounts to 422 hectares.
LAND USE
In recent years an area of approximately 270 hectares has been dedicated to cropping. IRRIGATED CROPS are grown under a 7 span towable centre pivot (2 x 56 hectares). A towable (Centerliner) linear move irrigation system (approx. 88 hectares) whilst Hardhose irrigators water 110 hectares in 9 smaller paddocks. All irrigation systems were installed in August 2010 and are driven by 3 phase power.
IRRIGATION WATER
2 dams commissioned in 2012/2013 hold water entitlements for 332ML. A 112.5ML licence provides 'direct take' water to centre pivots. Further to the existing licences, permission has now been granted to build another dam which is designed to hold 170ML.
LIVESTOCK WATER
Many paddocks have access to river water. Most other areas are supplied by tanks through gravity fed trough systems with the balance of paddocks having access to reliable farm dams.
FERTILISER
Since 2009 all renovated pastures have received between 3 and 4 tonnes of lime/hectare over that time, excluding some of the river flats. All cropping ground has been fertilised as required.
LIVESTOCK
Numbers as at December 2014 included 2,400 BL/M cross ewes, 800 merino ewes and wethers and 2,700 weaned lambs. Historically, Rostrevor carried 10,000 DSE, namely a Poll Hereford breeding herd and 6,000 medium Merino wool sheep.
HOMESTEAD
Beautifully situated on a rise overlooking the South Esk River, is the substantial sandstone brick home which was built in 1974. The house and private garden is located on the edge of an old eucalypt forest. The house accommodates formal dining and living rooms, country kitchen, casual family areas, 6 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Most rooms in this easy flowing comfortable home enjoy the warm northerly aspect. Nearby there is a large lake, a clay tennis court, a vegetable garden, orchard, unlimited domestic water and various farm sheds. The broad-waters on the South Esk River can accommodate enthusiasts of water skiing, trout fishing or canoeing.
FARM HOUSE
An original stone homestead circa 1840 offers accommodation of 4 to 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms over 2 levels. The house has been well maintained. Structurally it has been re-roofed (2012) and has been re-plumbed, re-wired.
OTHER FARM INFRASTRUCTURE
The shearing shed is 4 stand with a raised board, a large wool room and good staff facilities. There is ample undercover space for approx. 900 woollies which incorporates drafting and drenching races. Over the past 6 years 35 kilometres of new fencing and an additional 2 sets of sheep yards have been built to assist livestock management.
The cattle yards were built in times when a Poll Hereford herd numbered 300 breeders. There are 5 basic machinery sheds including a workshop.
