Last Listing description (June 2023)

Macquarie House is an important part of Tasmania's stagecoach history. In 1830, James Crear built a stone house with convict labour on land he received as a land grant in 1824. Originally a private residence, it was soon used as an Inn to cater to the booming coach transport industry operating between Hobart and Launceston. In 1870, the Inn closed and reverted back to a private home.

The well-known and highly admired two storey 171m2 Old Colonial Georgian residence has been beautifully restored by the current owners. The faade is symmetrical and has a wide verandah and notable wide door. The entrance hall leads you to a series of beautifully proportioned formal and informal living rooms and a classic country kitchen. The ground floor also includes the original tap room, now a large bedroom with ensuite, laundry and separate. toilet. The staircase leads you to three spacious bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Many of the original architectural features have been retained at Macquarie House, including high ceilings, American Softwood joinery and flooring, panelled doors, fireplaces, 12 paned windows with shutters, dormer windows and rare triglyph patterns above the stone door and window lintels. The front door has a handsome fanlight and original steel brackets and security bar once used for barricading at night against bushrangers.

The 3012m2 established garden is beautifully maintained with flowering garden beds, established trees and expansive lawn areas. The outbuildings include shedding, a chook run, woodshed, two car garage with a workshop and upstairs 9mx5m studio - perfect as an artist studio, retail venture or home office. The property is serviced by town water, septic tanks, mains power and solid fuel heating.

Macquarie House is situated close to the Georgian villages and hamlets of Perth, Longford, Evandale and Campbell Town. The city of Launceston and the airport is only a short 20 minute drive.

Macquarie House represents a unique and affordable opportunity to secure one of Tasmania's important and admired Georgian country houses - perfect as a weekend escape, private country house or accommodation. venture.
