Last Listing description (May 2022)

The elegant house at 38 Maconochie Street, Colebrook is in a now rare typology - being one of only two surviving Colonial period Probation Station Infirmary/Hospitals, within Tasmania.

No 38 Maconochie St, the former Jerusalem Probation Station Infirmary / Hospital is approached from the former convict road, into the drive and the garden, by a wide flight of stairs, facing north, with a large, logical faade of a sash window to either side of a wide Colonial front door.

The property was designed and surveyed by the Royal Engineers, thence built under their supervision, with convict made materials and labour. There is also the remnants of a convict prison cell downstairs. The walls of the cell are the only place in the house where the convict bricks with their markings are visible.

Within, the floor plan to the central rectangular block, as conceived, was one vast single room. The large main room was, intentionally facing the sunshine and the lovely Wallaby Rivulet. Post 1853, with the end of transportation of convicts, with a turn to domestic use, a hallway was made to the large main room, with two large rooms on either side now making the main bedroom and formal living/dining area.

The back door now utilised as the main entrance of the home leads you into the charming country kitchen. The kitchen offers stainless steel Fisher & Paykel appliances and is heated by a wood-heater. There are three open fireplaces throughout the residence, all in working order.

The Infirmary / Hospital sits within fertile colonial gardens of 1.037 hectares, on five titles. There is a three-bay carport providing ample parking, and two pony sheds in the paddocks.

Colebrook began as a Convict Probation Station to house convicts being moved between Richmond and Oatlands. Originally the town was known as Jerusalem. 38 Maconochie Street is within 25km to Richmond township, 29km to Oatlands, 40km to Hobart airport and within 53km to Hobart CBD. There are school buses passing through to Campania and Oatlands schools.

Truly, in real estate speak a unique property. The present owner's good conservation and respectful use of the place has ensured a healthy future for this seminal place to Tasmania's colonial period history and future owners.
