'Unique Ordnance Store ApartmentnAn exciting contemporary apartment in a unique location and historical setting, offering panoramic outlook to wharf, harbour and parkland; apartment seven on the third floor of the Ordnance Store at 19-21 Castray Esplanade offers all this and more ... all offering the opportunity of contributing to your lifestyle enjoyment.

The National Estate listed Ordnance Store at 19-21 Castray Esplanade Battery Point is the eastern wing of a grandiose design prepared in 1834 by John Lee Archer, the then Colonial Architect. This iconic building is significant in the Australian cultural environment.

Following purchase of the building in 1993, the Ordnance Store underwent major conservation and development work, changing its use to stratum titles for an African art gallery, architect offices and five individual apartments, together with secure parking for residents in a courtyard behind the building. The historic quality of the tooled sandstone walling and timber mill frame construction was preserved. Ground floor security grilles were reinstated and glazing installed to end loading bay openings. Major new works included a new entry, lift, and plumbing and electrical services. Each stratum was designed to reflect the owners personal needs within an overall agreed conservation value framework. The project architects, Bevan Rees and JAWS in collaboration, received an Australian Institute of Architects Award for their project.

The 210 m2 apartment seven at the eastern end third floor is the creation of vendors architect Bevan Rees and visual artist Yvonne Rees-Pagh, residents since completion in 1994. The spatial quality of the historic container, contributed to by tooled perimeter sandstone walling, deep recessed openings and exposed hewn timber mill framing, is conserved through sensitive insertion of minimal containing elements. Moving from the lift, the spatial experience flows through the apartment, with varied visual connections to the world beyond.

A mere stones-throw from vibrant Salamanca Place, this genuine waterfront apartment offers quiet seclusion at the threshold to Battery Point. Enjoy panoramic views to Princes Wharf, Princes Park and the Derwent harbour. As the morning sunlight streams in, watch the Sydney-Hobart yachts crossing the finishing line from your living room. Enjoy the tall ships, tankers, cruise boats and craft sailing by and the fun-runs, triathalons and cycle racing in Castray passing your door.

Words cannot adequately express the visual reality. Let the 'must see' 90 second HD video tour of the apartment and context reveal the full story from here.
