In the early years of the 1850s and 1860s, Yankalilla was one of the biggest and most important towns in the state apart from the mining centres in the north.
With the towns significance came the injection of government infrastructure including noteworthy buildings such as the old school house at 48 Main Street. The school was operated by several people, most famous being Sister Mary MacKillop. Sister Mary, canonised in 2010 as Australias first Catholic saint lead the Sisters of St. Joseph at this quaint and iconic landmark in 1867. Also known as The Brown Joeys, this order of nuns was devoted to teaching the children of the poor.
This unique and historic school house, now residence, is steeped in early Australiana rustic charm with the natural tones and warmth of stone, slate and timber reflecting the strength, character and tenacity of yesteryear. Its current custodians who have loved their home for over six years are now moving on, creating an opportunity for another chapter of this notable antiquity.
