Wellington East Marina is a real hidden secret gem in South Australia, only 98 ks from Adelaide CBD and only 10ks from Tailem Bend, a short bike ride for those inclined! Dont forget how close you will be to the new SA Motorsport Park . If you havent been to visit here, I certainly suggest that you do.
Wellingtons tag line is Living the lifestyle and I can certainly see why. Says it all really.
Wellington East is all about lifestyle, relaxing and unwinding. Fishing, boating, sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, and of course swimming; enjoying life and water sports in general. Walk to the local Pangarinda Botanic Garden and lie in wait for the native bird life to appear.
Steeped in history, Wellington was once a significant port on the Murray River, and the town is certainly valued for its historical significance and rural farming history. Drive around and view the lovely stone work of the local buildings from those good old, simple living days. The Courtyard Caf for prime example.
Ive borrowed the following spiel from the Coorong District Council website, thank you, as I feel like it sums up the history of Wellington beautifully:
Wellington is a small settlement on the banks of the River Murray. Like Tailem Bend, prior to European settlement the area around Wellington was home to the Ngarrindjeri people. They made bark and reed canoes and lived on the fish and the animals which came to the riverbank.
Following Captain Charles Sturt the whole area along the Murray was opened up by over landers who moved sheep and cattle across the land. It was the colonial land developer, John Morphett, who saw Wellington's potential. By 1839 Wellington had become one of the most important settlements on the Murray. The ferry (which was established that year) and the town became the only point where traffic could cross the Murray.
In 1840 a township was surveyed and named after the Duke of Wellington. It grew rapidly as a major transportation stopover point. It was the first stop for paddle-steamers plying the Murray north of Goolwa. It was the stopover point for people crossing the river from Adelaide to Victoria. During the 1850s, it became an important point on the gold run from the Victorian goldfields across to Adelaide.
Come and view the serenity for yourself. Come for a drive, bring the family, bring the dog, make an offer on this land .. you'll stay for a life time.
But dont let me spoil the surprise for you . I love this place and could talk about it forever. I know you will too.
