Location, facilities and services
Ear marked in the 30 year SA Government planning review, the township of Mt Pleasant is viewed by our government as a place for long term regional growth. Located 10km north-east of Birdwood and approximately 1 hour from Adelaide it is also within 20 minutes of the world class Barossa Valley region and 20 minutes to the popular river playground of the Murray lands.
Proudly home to the Mt Pleasant annual show the town also offers a thriving weekly Farmers market which has gained widespread recognition for its top quality produce.
Township facilities include a primary school, kindergarten, doctors rooms, district hospital with aged care, post office with banking facilities, butcher and general store. Chemist, caravan park, men's shed, RSL, football & tennis clubs, bowling club, golf club and pony club. CFS, bakery, motor cycle repair shop, mechanics garage and service station. Natural resources centre, library, town hall with active history room, public toilets, community re-create store and garden swap. Several church's, cemetery, Coopers farm supplies, stock sale yard, police station, book store, 2 hotels and a drive through bottle shop.
Transport
Transport is offered by private coach to the Tea Tree Plaza interchange and also to the Barossa Valley. The region offers excellent arterial roads to all surrounding townships.
History
Lined by beautiful plane trees the main street is very picturesque and offers a rich rural history. Surveyed in 1856 the area was subject to European settlement in the late 1830's. Gold was found in the district in the 1860's but the deposits were small and the miners soon moved on. Historically, the town grew slowly and was a small service centre for the surrounding region. It is home to some magnificent historical buildings including the former police station (Circa 1860) and the Old Talunga Hotel.
Mount Pleasant was once the terminus of the Mt Pleasant railway line which branched from Adelaide to Murray Bridge and Balhannah. The line opened in 1918 and closed in 1963 following improved road conditions via the Torrens Valley Rd. The former rail corridor is gradually being converted from Balhannah towards Mt Pleasant into a cycling, walking and horseback riding trail known as the Amy Gillett bikeway. As of 2015 the conversion has reached Mt Torrens and there is a current submission before council to extend this to Birdwood as at January 2016.
