Thomas Highland was a wealthy farmer hailing from England, UK, but Australia became his home and in the very early years of the survey of the town of Goolwa, he became one of the first residents. He built his residence in 1853, but passed away only a couple of years later. In 1884, this part of Highland's House, was extended to create a butcher shop.
