Last Listing description (September 2007)

'St Helen's' College Park. A gracious landmark mansion with pool and pavilion in one of Adelaide's finest locations!
Main Features
The house features numerous antique light fittings, ranging from magnificent chandeliers to wall sconces. The main rooms have antique marble fireplace surrounds, decorative plasterwork and antique panelled doors. Floors are of parquetry, marble and granite in addition to Axminster carpet in some downstairs rooms and the whole of the upstairs. Several of the ground floor doors are English oak and were made for Cliveden Mansion in Melbourne, circa 1870.

The house is fully reverse cycle air-conditioned and has several other heating sources, such as under floor heating (in the Entrance Hall, Library, Kitchen, Conservatory and master bathroom), fireplaces and ceiling heating.
Surrounded by a rustic bluestone wall and perimeter garden, the pool area creates a picture of elegance with eleven metre salt water swimming pool fully tiled in a restful green and has three security gates. There is a new filtering system and plumbing for solar heating. The stylish masonry pavilion features two roomed bathroom conveniences and undercover space for casual dining overlooking the pool and its garden. A magnificent gabled roof displays a wonderful architectural style.
GROUND FLOOR
The long, wide entrance hall is tiled in marble and features decorative plaster work, rag rolled paintwork and antique hall light. It has five superb Cliveden doors plus good wall and floor space for paintings and artwork with adjustable ceiling lighting for display purposes.
Magnificent in all respects, the drawing room has large bow window, which captures and disburses light into all corners of the room. Interesting antique wooden pilasters frame this curved window from which views of the beautifully landscaped front gardens can be enjoyed. Showcasing a French antique marble fireplace surround, this room certainly reflects the opulence and style of the era.
Traditionally a very relaxing and favoured room of the home, the library features a specially-commissioned carpet and original black marble fireplace (with an English gas fire) along with a very large window overlooking the southern garden. The library is air-conditioned and has underfloor heating.
Across the hall the large dining room features a striking antique crystal chandelier, an 18th century Italian fireplace with an English gas fitting for ultimate comfort and a large window overlooking the front gardens. From the dining room splendid double panelled doors open into the conservatory; a wonderful light filled room featuring intricate tessellated tiled floors and views of both the front and northerly gardens. For ease of entertaining, both areas are conveniently located to the kitchen, butler's pantry, cellar and informal entertaining area.
A very large, solid oak door at the end of the entrance hall opens into the interior portico of the living room, which ensures a subtle transition from public to private spaces. Floors are of marble and parquetry and three large panelled doors open into varied storage spaces. In the living room, period plaster detailing abounds, with some wood panelling in doorways, with panelled doors and matching window reveals. A large curved bay window area, which can be used for meals, overlooks the rear garden. Four sets of French doors open onto the gorgeous rear terrace, which connects all entertaining areas at the rear of the home with the garden, pool and pavilion. A stone open fireplace heats this room, together with air-conditioning and in-ceiling heating. There are multiple speaker outlets and this wiring is found throughout the ground floor. A stylish fully tiled marble bathroom services the downstairs area and features fine porcelain.
The kitchen has beautiful South Australian granite flooring and work surfaces, with Gaggenau and AEG appliances and is open to a spacious entertainment and meals area with large multiple-paned windows overlooking the side and rear gardens. Heating is by reverse cycle air conditioning, under floor and ceiling heating. The butler's pantry, connecting the dining room, kitchen and pantry, has granite serving surfaces, storage for wine and glasses and sink with a 'glasses dishwasher'. Adjacent is the fully fitted pantry with granite floor and bench tops and ample wooden shelving with access to the dry, stone floored cellar which is fitted to hold about 3,000 bottles. The cellar maintains a stable temperature between 15 and 18 degrees C.
A granite tiled hallway connects the kitchen and entertaining space with the living room, and is lined by six large storage cupboards. Nearby a fully fitted laundry with outside access opens from the kitchen hallway.
Off the main hallway, magnificent timber stairs rise in a light filled stairwell with under-stairs storage and delightful balcony off the landing with views of the southern gardens and pool pavilion.
