Last Listing description (April 2022)

City slickers pining for hustle and bustle, this one's not for you.

Sowhere is Black Rock?

Black Rock is a little place on the Black Rock Plains at the intersection of the north-south RM Williams Way, in the Southern Flinders Ranges of South Australia.

Just 12 minutes from your rural retreat will find you in Orroroo, 29 mins will find you in Jamestown, 21 minutes will find you in Peterborough, and just 2hrs 45 mins will find you in Adelaide.

It was originally laid out as "Dalton" and proclaimed on 15 December 1881. It is named after a nearby hill, and was renamed "Black Rock" in 1940.

The former Black Rock Baptist Church was erected mainly by voluntary labour and opened debt free on 11/1/1891. One can only imagine what a proud moment this must have been, with such community spirit.

Now proudly showcasing a high quality renovation only a few years old, the hard work has been done to create a wonderful retreat, with plenty of accommodation options- the quintessential flexible floorplan. A contemporary open plan kitchen with all the modern conveniences one would expect, overlooks a gloriously sizeable open plan dining and living area, bathed in natural light from the delightful windows, near where the parishioners would have sat all those years ago.

Perhaps you're looking to buy a home as a retreat, perhaps you're looking at the option of being able to host others as well.
There is then the option of up to two double and 1 single bedroom under the main building, or a single bedroom and an office, perhaps. There are two bathrooms under the main roof, both virtually new.
A second living area at the rear of the home is designed to give glorious views of the rear yard, and a simply breathtaking vista of the South Australian outback, with its ochre earth in stark contrast to the native vegetation and the clear blue sky.

A converted shipping container gives further options for guests, or for a teenaged retreat, with its fully contained bedroom and bathroom.

The home itself has splashes of its former life everywhere one looks. From a treasured old photograph of the congregation and citizens proudly standing outside on its opening day back in 1891, to the perfectly preserved leadlight windows which allow so much glorious sunlight in, the luxe interior acts as a contrast to the residence's rather austere frontage.

There are so many treasures to be discovered in these parts- hidden springs which are the sanctuary of a group of owls, a reservoir is close by with picnic areas, as is Appia Springs. Fishing is not far away at Spalding reservoir (75kms), which is stocked for fish. There's mysterious Magnetic Hill, Black Rock National Park and Mount Remarkable National Park.

Of course, if you're still reading, your interest has been piqued. And why wouldn't it be? With the headaches and the hassles of the city a distant memory, this is like another world. Ethereal, perhaps. And Attainable? Absolutely. It's been lovingly renovated by the current owner, but now it's someone else's turn to own this secluded piece of heaven.

What the vendor loves:

Beautiful sympathetic renovation with a flexible floorplan
