Situated in the heart of the famous Channel Country on the edge of Cooper's Creek is the town of Windorah. It offers a welcome and interesting stop over for travelers to Birdsville, Bedourie, and Longreach and points west. It doesn't get much more 'Outback' than here with giant red sand-hills, magnificent sunsets, historical sites and ruins, a nature drive and walk as well as great fishing spots.
Originally known as Stony Point, its current name is the Aboriginal word for 'Place of large fish'. This relates to Cooper's Creek, which is a top fishing spot, ideal for bird watching and water sports with a waterhole approximately 19 kilometers long and up to 10 meters deep.
A scenic 12 kilometer drive from Windorah to Cooper's Creek gives a view of an area with a diverse natural landscape and wide open spaces containing amazing and prolific wildlife that generates a true sense of 'The Outback'.

The main industry is cattle grazing, however recently oil and gas industries have developed in the area. Windorah is home to Queensland's first Solar Farm which opened in 2009. The Solar Farm aims to reduce the town's reliance on diesel fuel and cut green house emissions by approximately 300 tonnes a year.
