Last Listing description (November 2022)

Very rarely does a home come to the Townsville market that pulls at an Agents' heart strings in a way that this one has done. Brimming with traditional character and a timeless charm like no other, this historic home has stood proudly since the mid-to-late 1800's and embedded within its walls are stories and memories from generations of families waiting to be uncovered and brought back to life. A quintessential, classic, federation-style Queenslander, this landmark residence is an unforgettable piece of Townsville history, in a location that cannot be matched, presenting a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Explore Property Townsville proudly welcomes you to 80 Eyre Street in North Ward.

To bring this incredible story to life, we need to take a brief step back into the past. Eyre Street is the original, main street of Townsville and North Ward is known as the earliest established suburb. According to the late, Townsville historian, Dorothy Gibson-Wilde, it was possible that the home was transported to its current location in Eyre Street from Charters Towers in the mid-late 1800's. Power was connected around the 1930s and this is showcased in the homes original, art-deco lighting fixtures throughout. Among its occupants and many uses, the incredible, traditional brick chimney stove is believed to have serviced the original Bakery on Eyre, whilst one of its previous occupants was a proud Luthier, a craftsman of handmade, wooden violins, of which many of his original wooden templates were left hidden underneath the home, later to be recovered and proudly displayed in the house today.

Over the last 150 years, the home has steadily grown along with its occupants, transforming from a period, four-bedroom home with outhouse and maids' quarters, to a quaint, 3-bedroom residence with enclosed verandah, classic louvres, and inclusive bathroom, eventuating into the masterpiece it is now, the current owners having paid homage to its roots and traditionalism with every little detail.

Past the charming picket fence and up the stairs, the verandah has since been re-opened and is adorned with timber balustrading and decorative column brackets, showcasing the magnificent, symmetrical front faade. The central hallway is rich in character with rounded archways, fretwork and ceiling roses, branching off on each side with two, generously proportioned bedrooms to the right, and an expansive ballroom inspired living room to the left. Adjoining the third bedroom, the rear of the home, (once the original maids wing), is now an expansive, rear sleepout with coloured-glass casement windows and bottom timber louvres- architectural characteristics of a classic Queenslander that showcase climate consideration with the purpose of capturing those all-encompassing coastal breezes off the shore.

The kitchen is open and functional with a plethora of cabinetry and storage space, with outstanding features from the mullioned glass cabinetry doors on the overheads, and the stunning, solid brick chimney. Some years ago, the bathroom which was originally located outside was moved indoors, transforming the maids' sleeping quarters into high quality, modern masterpiece. Utilising crisp, contemporary colours and feature tiles, this bathroom houses a large, walk-in shower, freestanding bathtub, double-sink vanity with scalloped handles and copper hardware throughout.

Looking at the history that envelopes the halls of this home and seeing firsthand the transformation that it has grown through truly pulls at the heart strings. Positioned perfectly on 1,012 square metres of highly valuable, prime land in North Ward, the canvas is blank and holds immense potential of scope for the new custodian to continue this homes story and bring to life a new generation backed by dreams.

Nestled at the base of Castle Hill, this home houses a multitude of sprawling lifestyle options. North Ward is home to Jezzine Barracks and The Strand, a bustling seaside foreshore with a never-ending collection of cafes, restaurants, bars, and specialty shops. The Strand is a hub of activity with many swimming spots, tropical landscaping lining the footpaths and hosting plethora of special events throughout the year.

A passionate, labour of love from the current owners, 80 Eyre Street is the gift that keeps on giving and is the product of over 150 years of life and adoration. We would be nothing short of proud to welcome you to come and experience the history and emotion for yourself. Contact Giovanni to EXPLORE, today.
