About Macleay Island
Macleay Island is the second largest of the four Southern Moreton Bay Islands, 30km from Brisbane in the Moreton Bay Marine Park at the southern end of Moreton Bay and 60mins away from the Gold Coast. It is 6.5km long and 4km wide at its widest point. Protected by North Stradbroke Island to the east.
In the protected channels and waterways of Moreton Bay surrounding the Bay Islands, dolphins, turtles and dugongs can often be seen in the pristine waters. Here you will find plentiful opportunities to enjoy safe swimming, crabbing, snorkeling, boating and water sports.
The four islands are rich in flora and fauna and edged with mangrove foreshores interspersed with sandy beaches. Bird lovers will be enthralled by the annual visits by migratory birds from Japan and China, as well as many non-migratory species. This little delightful subtropical island offers abundant natural attractions and a taste of an idyllic island lifestyle.
Fishing in the area is great with abundant fish stocks as the green zones and mangroves help keep the area alive with various fish. It's common all year to land flathead and bream while you wait for a good size mud crab. In the winter months, you can target snapper, jew fish and prawns.
Macleay Island is a very friendly welcoming community with a hospitable small town attitude and many activities and interests. Its beautiful coastal parks have barbecue facilities, Pat's Park at Potts Point to the north and Dalpura Beach to the west being popular spots. Boaters and anglers love the multiple boat ramps and easy access to Moreton Bay, while arts enthusiasts can explore the thriving arts complex, where exhibitions and workshops are regular features.
Visit the bowls club for a bite to eat, bowls or some live entertainment with its stunning views across Moreton Bay. Some sailing at the boat club and watch the sunset, swing your club around the golf course or throw your pots in to score a crab or two.
Island Community Services
Macleay Island is also host to a number of service organisations such as Lions and the Macleay Island Progress Association. There is a doctors, chemist, dentist, vet, pub and many small island businesses which cater for the community. A primary school, ambulance station, SES and Volunteer Fire Brigade are based on the island. A variety of supermarkets, cafs, monthly markets and general stores cater for all your needs or you can enjoy a meal at a local club.
Macleay Island is easily accessed 7 days a week from the mainland by vehicle barge or passenger ferry from Redland Bay, which also connects to inter-island transport for the four Bay Islands. Passenger ferry takes 18 mins and the car ferry is 45mins. The golf and bowls club have a courtesy bus too. They will pick you up and drop you home so no worry about drinking.
