BUNGARRAH - CHELMSFORD AVENUE - THE PLACE TO LIVE
IT IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT TO SAY MAGNIFICENT VIEWS, AS ONLY AN INSPECTION WILL REVEAL. AN UNASSUMING STREET ENTRANCE CANNOT PREPARE YOU FOR THE UNBELIEVABLE VIEW WHICH CAPTIVATES YOU FROM THE FRONT DOOR! IN THE LATE 80’S EXTENSIVE RENOVATIONS WERE CLEVERLY DESIGNED BY AWARD WINNING ARCHITECT BRUCE BUCHANAN TO MAXIMISE VIEWS, BREEZES AND FUNCTIONALITY, INCLUDING A 58 SQ METRE DECK WHICH ENJOYS UNINTERRUPTED VIEWS NORTH TO NORTH EAST AND WEST.
WITH ONLY THREE FAMILIES EVER TO OWN THIS UNIQUE PIECE OF REAL ESTATE, IT IS INDEED A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO SEIZE, NOT ONLY PRIME IPSWICH REAL ESTATE, BUT TO CAPTURE A LIFESTYLE AND VIEWS RESERVED FOR ONLY A FORTUNATE FEW. THE LIMITED NUMBER OF HOMES ON THE RIDGE OF DENMARK HILL, MAKE THIS A PREMIUM INVESTMENT WITH INNER CITY REAL ESTATE SKY-ROCKETING. IDEAL FOR THE PROFESSIONAL FAMILY WHO LOVE TO ENTERTAIN, THE OPEN PLAN DESIGN SUPPLIES EASY LIVING AND A RELAXED LIFESTYLE.

FIVE BEDROOMS ON THE TOP LEVEL INCLUDING A FULL PARENTS RETREAT WITH ENSUITE AND OFFICE AND FEATURING THE ORIGINAL ITALIAN BLACK AND RED MARBLE FIREPLACE IMPORTED IN THE LATE 1800’S. THE ORIGINAL CEDAR BALUSTRADE REMAINS AS AN INTERNAL STAIRCASE, WHICH LEADS TO THE LAUNDRY. AN EXTENSIVE AREA UNDER COULD BE DEVELOPED IF SO DESIRED. PURISTS WILL LOVE THE AMAZING BRICK WALL UNDER WHICH TIME HAS NOT ALTERED. THE CURRENT OWNERS HAVE RESIDED IN THIS BEAUTIFUL HOME FOR 18 YEARS SO IF YOU MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY, LIKE ALL OUTSTANDING PROPERTY IN IPSWICH IT WILL BE A LONG TIME BEFORE YOU HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE. HISTORY INFORMATION
THERE HAS BEEN A HOUSE CALL “BUNGARRAH” ON DENMARK HILL FOR OVER 100 YEARS – BUT ONLY THE NAME AND THE CHIMNEY HAVE REMAINED THE SAME. THE FIRST “BUNGARRAH” HAD A VICTORIAN FLAVOUR WITH IRON LACE AND TIMBER BLINDS ON ITS VERANDAHS AND A FRETWORK PEDIMENT ABOVE THE ENTRANCE. THE DRAWING ROOM HAD A FIREPLACE WITH A CHIMNEYPIECE OF BLACK AND RED MARBLE. CEDAR STAIRS IN THE HALLWAY LED DOWN TO A LAUNDRY WHERE A WOMAN CAME IN EACH WEEK TO DO THE WASHING IN A BUILT-IN COPPER. THE HOUSE WAS BUILT LATE LAST CENTURY AND WAS OWNED BY MEMBERS OF THE CRIBB AND FOOTE FAMILY, CECELIA FOOTE IN EARLY 1912, THEN JOSEPH FOOTE CRIBB A FEW MONTHS LATER. ON JOSEPH’S DEATH, IT PASSED TO HARRY CRIBB, THEN TO ELIZABETH FOOTE AND EDITH FOOTE. EDITH MARRIED IPSWICH DENTIST JOHN THOMAS FOX. THEIR FAMILY OF FIVE CHILDREN – THREE GIRLS AND TWO BOYS – LIVED IN OLD “BUNGARRAH”. THEY ENJOYED THE HOUSE AND THEIR LARGE GARDEN WITH ITS MANGO, PAWPAW, PERSIMMON AND NUT TREES. ONE OF THE CHILDREN WAS EDITH FOX, LATER KNOWN TO GENERATIONS OF IGS STUDENTS AS MATRON FOX. ANOTHER DAUGHTER, DOROTHY, MARRIED DAVID PAYNE IN 1933 AND SIX YEARS LATER, THEY BECAME OWNERS OF OLD “BUNGARRAH”.
MR PAYNE WAS AN ACCOUNTANT, AUDITOR FOR THE BUTTER FACTORY AND SECRETARY OF THE IPSWICH CEMETERY TRUST. HE NEEDED AN OFFICE FOR HIS BUSINESS AND HE WASN’T FOND OF THE IRON LACE ALONG THE VERANDAHS OF THE OLD HOUSE. AROUND THE BEGINNING OF WORLD WAR 2, MR AND MRS PAYNE DECIDED TO REBUILD.
THE OLD HOUSE WAS DEMOLISHED BUT THE MAGNIFICENT CHIMNEYPIECE WAS LEFT STANDING. BUILDER A.I. EDWARDS, PLUMBER R.N. WILKES AND BRICKLAYER MR STEWART BUILT A NEW HOUSE AROUND THE CHIMNEY, USING SOME NEW MATERIALS AND REUSING SOME OF THE OLD TIMBER. NEW “BUNGARRAH” WAS A SOLID HOUSE IN 1930’S STYLE. IT HAD DRESSED WEATHERBOARDS AND WAS SUPPORTED ON BRICK PIERS ABOUT 4 METRES HIGH. THE ORIGINAL STAIRS WERE RE-USED TO LEAD DOWN TO THE OLD LAUNDRY. THE MARBLE FIREPLACE, FAR TOO IMPRESSIVE TO BE DEMOLISHED, SURVIVED THE REBUILDING AND EMBELLISHED THE NEW LIVING ROOM. A ROOM NEAR THE FRONT ENTRANCE WAS USED A MR PAYNE’S OFFICE AND A LONG ROOM AT THE REAR WAS USED FOR PLAYING INDOOR BOWLS. THE BOWLS ROOM HAD TIMBER VENEER WALLS, PLASTER CEILINGS AND MAGNIFICENT VIEWS OF THE CITY. BUILT-IN BENCH SEATS WITH LIDS STORED THE MAT AND BOWLS.
ITS NEW OWNERS ARE SURE TO BE INTRIGUED BY THE STORY OF THE HOUSE THAT WAS REBUILT. SOME STORIES BEGIN WITH THE COMMENT “THIS STORY IS TRUE, ONLY THE NAMES HAVE BEEN CHANGED”. IN THIS CASE THE HOUSE HAS BEEN CHANGED, BUT THE NAME AND THE VIEWS REMA
