ABOUT COOKTOWN
With a bitumen sealed road now right through to Cooktown, this historic and naturally beautiful town is poised on the brink of discovery for many visitors who have been waiting to experience this area and the whole diverse Cape York adventure.
Cooktown has a history spanning three centuries, beginning with Captain James Cook, the collision of his ship, the Endeavour with a coral reef, followed by his beaching of the ship for repair in the harbour that now bears the name of the Endeavour River.
Cooktown, also named in his honour, became a flourishing settlement in the 1870s due to the discovery of Gold in the Palmer River and the subsequent mining of tin in the area. This led to the development of a busy port trading between the southern parts of Australia and New Guinea.
Cooktown is settled by the harbour on the Endeavour River with the spectacular Great Dividing Range to the north and west and to the east is unspoilt coastline bordering the Coral Sea. The Great Barrier Reef is just 8 nautical miles to the east. North of Cooktown, stretching to the Tip of Cape York Peninsula is endless miles of beaches, pristine country and lagoons abundant with fish and bird life. Drive south on the Coast Road and you will soon be in the World Heritage Wet Tropics area leading to the Bloomfield River, Cedar Bay National Park and the Daintree.
This area has a prehistory richness dating back thousands of years. Today the descendants are proud of their culture and willing to share it with you at their communities at Hopevale, Wujal Wujal and the Quinkan Centre at Laura.
The Cooktown area really is the place for you to purchase your own piece of Paradise. Come and see for yourself ??? Cooktown is now only 45 minutes from Cairns by Skytrans or 3.5 hours on the new bitumen inland road. We know you will love it.
