History of the Property
The land on which the original (whole) house was constructed was part of the Witton Township Estate, subdivided in the 1880s by Andrew Bogle. At the time he was the owner of Witton Manor, which was located on the site of today's Nudgee Junior College.
In February 1886, title for 3 allotments (subdivisions 22 -24 of Portion 25, encompassing the future 18 Bridge street) passed to the Hon. Patrick Perkins, brewer and politician. Perkins had arrived in Victoria from Ireland in 1855. With his brother he set up a store and brewery at Castlemaine. Following a move to Queensland he established a brewery in Toowoomba (1869) and speculated in real estate and mining. Perkins also served as a Queensland MLA and MLC and was at one time the Minister for Lands.
Perkins' purchase of the land at Indooroopilly appears to have been one of his many speculative ventures. In 1891 he mortgaged the 3 allotments, on which no house had at this time been constructed, to William Barker Shaw, a Melbourne merchant and one of the provisional directors of Perkins & Co. at its incorporation in 1882.
By 1892 Perkins' overdraft at the Queensland National Bank was one of the largest in the colony of Queensland (99,485) and financial disaster loomed. He died relatively impoverished in Melbourne in 1901. William Barker Shaw died in 1907 and the mortgage was released in 1908. Title for the allotments passed to Ellen Mary Perkins, Patrick Perkins' widow, in 1913.
New title for the 3 allotments was issued to James Shaw McFarlane and Francis Kearsey Davis in April 1915. James McFarlane was registered as the sole owner in January 1917. A bill of mortgage for 50 was registered on the title in December of the same year (released in 1922), indicating the likely year of construction of the original, large, verandahed Queensland style timber residence on the river.
On the Witton Township estate maps and until 1941-42, nearby Twigg Street was known as Maud Street. Queensland Post Office Directories (QPOD) show James S McFarlane was resident in Maud Street, Indooroopilly, from around 1920, though not for long.
