Designed to provide lodgings for the distinctly robust men of the
Colonial Mounted Police, the barracks were completed in 1897 and
must have been a comforting haven after endless weeks of trekking
around the early colony's wilderness. The barrack-style
accommodation meant that the trooper's would have swapped tall
tales and carried out their daily disciplines within the same stout
walls that remain here today.

True, it's a nostalgic property but time moves on and the many
comfortable design attributes intended for the troopers make the
Barracks a wonderful current-era private residence.

Many of the home's period attributes (such as the hand routed cedar
skirtings, doors & architraves) remain in place along with the
spacious dormitory-designed rooms that have adapted to use as
individual bedrooms and living areas. The hardwood floors provide
the perfect back-drop for rugs, and the ideal solution to the foot
traffic of modern family life.

The home's upper level comprises 3 enormous bedrooms, a sitting
room/4th bedroom and a recently upgraded bathroom and powder room.
Reminiscent of other contemporary government designs the internal
layout branches off a central hallway that continues to provide the
effective ventilation it did over a century ago. Historical records
say that this hallway originally ended with a doorway &
external 'flight of rough wooden steps' that dropped down to the
lower level's entry door. All this area is now enclosed.

Downstairs, the lower level is an atmospheric portrayal of 137
years of life's flow, adaption and sympathetic modern upgrades.

The modern kitchen's centrepiece is a stunning AGA positioned in
front of the original stone fireplace. Country-style Blackwood
cabinetry, French provincial fittings & the low ceiling all add
to the mellow feel of this well used room. Interestingly, the
walk-in pantry is in the same spot as it was when the building was
originally completed.

Just across the hallway there's a living area or 5th bedroom and
just up the hallway the original cellars have been turned into a
games room & wine cellar dining room. There's an overarching
feel of timelessness in these cellars.

Outside on the lower level there's a covered alfresco dining area
plus a very useful timber outbuilding that was probably the
scullery and trooper's tack room. The timber cladding profile type
on this building is authentic to the period and the building now
houses a recently upgraded bathroom, laundry and utility room.
