For your information, here is some of the history of St. Albans-:

St. Albans
Macdonald Valley NSW 2775 Australia
The village of St. Albans is situated on the banks of the Macdonald river branching
off the much larger Hawkesbury River about 118 kilometers north west of Sydney and
considering the areas historical links with the early Colony of New South Wales and
the close proximity to Sydney the village of St. Albans remains relatively unknown.
In fact the valley has been for many, many years been referred to by the locals as the
‘Forgotten Valley’ for it has been by-passed over time by all the major road and rail
routes leading north from Sydney. This of course makes up some of the lovely charm
of the valley and its community.
St. Albans, New South Wales, Australia, was named after the Town of St. Albans in
England, north of London. St. Albans, Hertfordshire, in turn, was named after
Britain’s first Christian martyr, Alban of Verulamium. Alban was a Roman citizen of
Verulamium - a town of major repute. Verulamium fell into decay in the 5th century
but its ruin provided the materials for the construction of many buildings, including
the famed Abbey and Cathedral Church, which contains Alban’s shrine. St. Albans
evolved around the Abbey Church as a small Saxon settlement. By the 13th century it
had sufficient significance to be the venue for the drafting of the Magna Carta.
In the township of our St. Albans there are several noticeable stone buildings of which
the most prominent is the Settlers Arms Inn. This is a fine two storey sandstone
coaching inn who’s licence was issued to John Sullivan of Wollombi in 1836.
High above the village stand an imposing stone building and this was the last Police
Courthouse and Lockup. It was constructed in 1890 to replace the previous
structure damaged by floods. It is now in private hands and is used as a luxury, self
contained guest house and is in an excellent state of preservation.
The School Of Arts Community Hall was erected in memory of Mrs. J. D.
Fernance for services rendered to the St. Albans School of Arts from its inception to
her death. The building was constructed in 1936.
Up at the top of Wharf Road that still leads down to the original point of ‘Bullock
Wharf’, on one of the highest sites in the village of St. Albans, stands the stone built
Anglican Church Of St. Alban. St. Alban was a Roman citizen who converted to
Christianity and was the first British Christian martyr. He was executed in the year
209. The famous Cathedral and Abbey of St. Alban is on the site of a Benedictine
monastery founded in 793. ‘The Martyr’s Cathedral’ is located in England on the
site where Alban was killed. This was built in 1077. The other stone Church in the
township of St. Albans is the Methodist Church in Espie Street, near the Wollombi
Road and is now privately owned.
Also in the valley was a small Catholic community and the nearest Catholic Church
to the Village was a Church dedicated to Our Lady Of Loreto. This structure was
a beautiful gothic stone chapel for about forty people located about five kilometers
north of St. Albans, it was completed in 1842 on land donated by Roger Sheean in
1839. He is buried in the old graveyard next to the ruins of the chapel. This was the
first Roman Catholic church to be built in the valley. Ruins are all the remains of this
beautiful structure today and it has now reverted to private property and cannot be
visited.
At the bottom of Wharf Road that still leads down to the original point of Bullock
Wharf, is a substantial bridge. The bridge that now spans the Macdonald River at
St. Albans is still in use and was opened in 1901, it is classified by the National Trust.
The bridge is of steel-framed construction with a wooden deck suitable for a single
land of traffic and is some 20 meters from the riverbed to clear any large floods. It is
one of only two of this type of construction remaining in New South Wales.
Located within the St. Albans village is the local branch of the New South Wales
Rural Fire Service. This is manned by volunteers drawn from the valley and is a
focal point for village activities.
