Rainfall & water
The district average annual rainfall is 450mm. The holding has 3.7km frontage to the permanent Old Man Creek. There are several dams and six troughs. The homestead garden water is secure and there are numerous rain water tanks.
Irrigation
Penally has two irrigation licences being; 606ML Mid Murrumbidgee Zone 3 groundwater licence and 12ML Murrumbidgee River General Security Licence. There is also a secure stock and domestic licence of 8ML. The irrigation system is supplied by two pumps on the permanent Old Man Creek and four irrigation bores. There is also a 20ML storage dam. Pasture & timber
In recent years Penally has been carefully transitioned from double cropping irrigation to pasture development running 2400 ewes and lambs. Currently there is 377ha of improved pastures, including 115ha established lucerne, 127ha clover based pastures, 75 ha clover and rye and 60ha of ryre phalaris and clover. Timber native to the property is yellow box, red gum and grey box.
Soils & fertility
Penally consists primarily grey self-mulching clays and red loams, the holding comprises approximately 640ha of arable land. Traditionally, all crops are sown with 80kg/ha of MAP. Depending on the season if appropriate 70kg/ha of Urea is applied in the spring. All paddocks have a history of lime application. Soil tests are taken regularly.
Jojoba plantation
The Penally jojoba plantation was established in 1999 and has approximately 50,000 plants and is now well established and in full production. The vendor describes the jojoba plantation as low maintenance and lucrative. Typically plants are harvested in dry months, usually July and December. The workload is minimal with an annual application of herbicide to control spring weed growth.
Housing
