The History
This handsome sandstone and red brick building was designed by architects Witt & Merewether, and is named after the first Bishop of Newcastle, the Rev William Tyrrell
(1849-1879). The foundation stone was laid on 24 November 1920 by the 5th Bishop of Newcastle the Rev Reginald Stephen and the building was opened on 4 July the following year. It initially housed the administrative offices of the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle.
