Last Listing description (February 2022)

A landmark property occupying a prominent 1698sqm landholding overlooking the Pacific Ocean in one of Merewether's most prestigious enclaves.

Enchanting Barrymore is a magnificent five-bedroom plus study, four-bathroom heritage-listed home, meticulously restored and beautifully renovated to provide luxurious family accommodation.

Spanning a remarkable 148-year history Barrymore c.1873 was built in the Victorian Regency style by the Merewether family as their beach house. One of Newcastle's finest homes, its privileged position and proportions strikes a perfect chord between period grandeur and laidback luxury in a prized location mere footsteps from the golden sands between Bar Beach and Dixon Park.

Set behind a manicured garden affording a true sense of arrival with beautifully appointed interiors, Barrymore's memorable current day accommodation is the result of a carefully considered renovation taking cues from the glamour of Hollywood Regency design.

Marble fireplaces, soaring patterned ceilings, polished floors, leadlight windows, and a beautiful carved staircase add proud, individual character. Facing north, the property is wonderfully light filled capturing idyllic garden and coastal views and features multiple living and entertaining spaces. A swimming pool, wrap-around verandahs, a wine cellar and self-contained accommodation delivers the ultimate environment to relax, play and entertain.

An uplifting sense of style and space and wonderful connection with the outdoors creates a remarkable home in one of Newcastle's most prized family addresses.

History of the Residence: 'Barrymore' was originally built by the Merewether family and known alternatively as 'The Sandhills' and 'Brynhfryd'. Anecdotal evidence suggests that it was built as a summer house for the young Merewether family who would escape from 'The 'Ridge (Hillcrest House) and enjoy the beach. The land on which 'Barrymore' sits is part of the original 456-acre land grant made to A.W Scott prior to 1835. Built in 1873 by Merewether Estate and mentioned in EC Merewether's personal correspondence 8/1/1875. In 1912 it was sold to Richard Daniel Barry of Sydney, a well-known sportsman and businessman who died in 1916. Owned by the estate of the late R J Barry until 1919. Kilgour Avenue was originally named Reuss Street after the first surveyor of Merewether.
