Last Listing description (July 2013)

Named after beautiful County Wicklow in Ireland, Wicklow is a magnificent 170 acre property tucked away beneath the rugged escarpments of Kangaroo Valley - a place of stunning scenic beauty just two hours drive from Sydney or Canberra. From the entrance on Walkers Lane, driving through Creek Paddock and up towards the farmhouse, the unfolding landscape of undulating pastures, rainforest and rural vistas is simply breath-taking.

Wicklow is a special place to enjoy seclusion and natural beauty, within a short drive to the village of Kangaroo Valley or 20 minutes to Berry and coastal beaches.

For the past 19 years, Wicklow has been a secluded and peaceful haven for a Sydney-based couple who enjoyed the property as a wonderful country escape from the pressures of city life. Here they lovingly restored the original farmhouse as an inviting and comfortable country home, much enjoyed over the years by their children and now grandchildren, with many special family gatherings along the way, including a wedding with over 80 guests enjoying the festivities marquee-style, down by a delightful meandering creek.

"The views are just beautiful here when you go out for a walk," say the owners. "You feel like you've stepped into The Sound of Music! We love sitting on the front verandah watching the mist lifting in the morning and enjoying the view in the late afternoon. The grandchildren love to visit - they explore and go on adventures, splash about in the creeks, go on picnics and camp out in different spots around the property and cook around a camp fire."

The focal point of Wicklow is the restored farmhouse, oozing charm and atmosphere, standing in an elevated position with beautiful views from the wide verandah running the full length of the house and from every room. Inside, there are three double bedrooms plus a master bedroom with built-in robes, an en suite bathroom and full-length windows opening to an arbour deck.

The heart of the farmhouse is a large French style country kitchen, which flows seamlessly into the dining and sitting areas. "We love to entertain and this is where we all seem to congregate," say the owners. The kitchen features a double oven and gas burner stove top, built-in dishwasher, pantry and ample bench space where three to four people can comfortably prepare food together. This area is heated by a slow combustion stove in winter, complemented by ceiling fans and reverse-cycle air conditioning.

A practical feature of the home is a very large terracotta-tiled 'mud room' opening from the back door. The full size laundry, additional pantry/storage, linen closet and separate toilet plus main bathroom all open from the mud room. A carport for three cars runs adjacent to the back door.

The farmhouse is surrounded by established gardens including many varieties of deciduous trees and beautiful cottage gardens featuring old-fashioned roses, camellias and azaleas.

The current owners derive income from the raising of Angus cattle on the property. Future owners could capitalise on this or investigate other farming pursuits. There is also potential to convert the original dairy buildings into farmstay accommodation.

The property has seven fully-fenced paddocks and is equipped with cattle yards and two dairies - an original weatherboard dairy with two internal rooms and two open bays and a newer brick building with two internal rooms, racked, with a roller shutter door. There is also a two-bay machinery shed.

Water from the creek supplies the property along with several dams and soaks plus a permanent spring which is reticulated to the yards. The farmhouse is supplied from a large concrete water tank. A separate tank supplies water to the gardens.

"We've enjoyed developing Wicklow over the years immensely," say the owners. "It's been a special time for us connecting with country life and the Valley community and sharing this romantic place with family and friends. We hope that new owners will benefit from our hard work, build on our legacy and create their own wonderful memories here."
