Gilgandra is located in the central west of New South Wales approximately half way between Melbourne and Brisbane approximately 30 minutes north of the regional centre of Dubbo. Gilgandra has a population of 2700 people with 4700 living in the district.
Gilgandra is known as the town of Windmills and Home of the Coo-ees. Until 1966 the town did not have a central water supply and most people in the town had a windmill. At one point the skyline of the township was dominated with approximately 360 Windmills. The home of the Coo-ee refers to the march of 35 men from Gilgandra to Sydney in 1915 to volunteer for the war. By the time they reached Sydney their numbers had swelled to 263 making the 1915 Coo-ee March from Gilgandra to Sydney the first and most successful recruitment march of World War 1
The Gilgandra District is predominantly an agricultural area with sheep, beef cattle and winter cereal cropping being the main enterprises. The local economy also relies on the business that the traffic on the Newell highway provides. We are an ideal place to stop on your journey with plenty of clean and affordable Motels, caravan parks, pubs, clubs and cafes.
The strength of Gilgandra is the people. The community has services that you would not expect to find in a community of 2700 people. This is largely due to the great community spirit, pride and participation that make it a great place to live, work and enjoy a relaxed country lifestyle but with the advantage of being close to a major regional centre.
