FURTHER HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The Old Rectory (formerly St. Aidan's Rectory, Eureka).
St. Aidan's Anglican Church next door was built in 1895. It was the first Anglican church to be built in what is now Byron Shire.

The Rectory, or Vicarage as it was called then, was built in 1903 at a cost of 600 pounds, then an
enormous sum. It was officially blessed by the Bishop of Grafton and Armidale, following the
induction of the first Vicar of the newly formed Eureka Parish. Although the weather was inclement, more that 350 people sat down for lunch under canvas.

The Rectory was the centre of the Eureka Parish and 13 clergymen and their families lived here over the years. The Vicar (later called Rector) had a wide area to cover and looked after centres at Eltham, Clunes, Springvale, Rosebank, Repentance Creek, Federal and Goonengerry.
In the early days he travelled on horseback, then sulky, then motor bike and finally a motor-car.
