CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NEW CUSTODIANS OF ALLUM HOUSE.

Allum House, designed by the architect John Hunt, is a product of its time and place. It was designed in 1966, at a time when a number of Sydney architects were strongly drawn to rustic materials and raked rooflines, and were at pains to use passive solar principles in their designs.

The original brief to John Hunt had been for a light-filled, low-maintenance house with plenty of room for entertaining, as much storage as possible and privacy from immediate neighbours. Hunts design clearly meets all parts of the brief whilst delivering so much more.

28 Warrington Avenue features a U-shape plan, often used in mid-century modern designs, with exposed brick walls and quarry-tiled floors in most rooms. It has a generous terrace at its centre and overlooks the garden and Garigal National Park.

Internally, the house measures approximately 123sq m. The home features three bedrooms, one bathroom, a separate WC, galley kitchen and an open plan living area opening out to the terrace and garden, offering stunning views of the neighbouring national park.

Despite being built almost 50 years ago, Allum House, still in the hands of its original owners, essentially hasnt changed. It remains in immaculate condition.

The galley kitchen, central to the houses design, is in original and excellent condition with custom-made, western red cedar cupboard doors, bevel-edged to do away with the need for handles, floor-to-ceiling cupboards, concealed lighting and narrow drawers that reveal built-in chopping boards. Other original features of the house include the raked ceiling with exposed timber beams, an open fireplace with dramatic copper flue and the bathroom again, in exceptional condition, and perhaps the most extravagant room in the house, with full-height walls of mosaic tiles and the most elegant privacy glazing system.

Throughout the house, glass voids above interior doors open up the spaces and bring a further sense of light into the interior. The roofline continues to form broad window overhangs, designed to keep out the harsh summer sun, yet allow in the winter rays; external walls extend beyond the buildings corners to maximise privacy from neighbours.

The architectural integrity of the home is strengthened not only by the design itself, but by its position on the property. Hunt took advantage of the 838 sq m sloping block by tucking the house well away from the road. Essentially, the house is invisible from the street, offering complete privacy and stunning north westerly views of Garigal National Park.

While there had been thoughts in the early days of extending the house in fact, it had been designed with that in mind the owners discovered over the years that it was flexible enough to meet their changing needs. It does so quietly, unobtrusively and very effectively a testament to its thoughtful yet rigorous design.

THE ARCHITECT:

John Hunt worked with architect and designer Douglas Snelling between 1956 and 1964, one of Asia-Pacific's most significant interpreters of California modern design and architecture innovations. The company, Douglas B. Snelling Architect, designed Sydney's largest organic modernist houses of the 1950s and 1960s.

After leaving Douglas Snelling, John Hunt set up Payne & Hunt with Lindsay Payne. They designed a number of houses, mainly on the North Shore and northern suburbs of Sydney. Hunt incorporated many of the innovations from the high-profile projects with Snelling and these can be seen clearly in Allum House.
