Last Listing description (April 2019)

A charming and immaculate 1889 bluestone cottage (originally a schoolhouse) situated just a short, level stroll from Crookwell CBD.
The cottage was extensively renovated in 2016/2017 to the highest standards, including complete rewiring and re-plumbing. Extending the rear of the cottage has created a spacious, light-filled study/living room looking out over the garden and accessing new laundry and powder room. This beautiful room features under-floor heating and double-glazing, as well as wall-length storage and work desk. Shoji screens separate the area from the lounge, dining and kitchen spaces, allowing for a fully open-plan arrangement or the ability to close off and create private work space or guest accommodation when required.
The lounge and dining areas are ambient and cosy, with a super-efficient slow-combustion heater, exposed bluestone wall and original French doors to the side verandah and garden. They are open to a stunning new kitchen featuring AEG appliances and plentiful storage in the screened pantry and soft-closing drawers. A full-width double-glazed window again ensures abundant natural light and a beautiful outlook.

Arabic tiles lend wonderful character to the new bathroom, with underfloor heating, a very spacious walk-in shower, modern industrial vanity, toilet and storage cupboard. It is easily accessed from the generous main bedroom with built-in wardrobes and from the den/second bedroom. These front rooms take full advantage of the borrowed landscape afforded by the lovely park opposite the cottage.
Spring St Cottage sits on a 1,100 square metre lot. Current owners, Jennie and Rob Churchill, well known for their care and development of the renowned Kiloren garden, purchased the property in 2010 with the garden almost a blank canvas.
The sunny garden has been thoughtfully designed, with much time spent on the spatial layout and refining the plant list to a restricted palette known to be reliable. Influences include the American landscape team Oehme, van Sweden and, of course, Edna Walling. Her 'rules' for ensuring an entire garden couldn't be seen in one glance and the importance of inserting an architectural backbone- here, gabion walls built from local basalt- informed the design process. Big drifts of the same species have been used, along with the creation of layers of planting that provide foliage interest all year.
Grasses, tough shrubs and full sun perennials predominate. Unlike most Crookwell gardens that favour spring, Spring Street was specifically designed to peak in summer and autumn, with the grasses, sedums and other perennial heads carrying right through Crookwell's cold winters.
Edna Walling also emphasised the importance of planting at all levels, both for visual impact and to encourage birdlife. Species such as agastache, salvia and daphne feed a family of Eastern Spinebills each year, and the dense planting encourages wrens to nest. Birdbaths are important and popular! Now numerous species, from parrots and magpies, several honeyeaters to wrens, silvereyes and thornbills, frequent the garden.
Outbuildings provide extensive storage and work-space. Completely screened from house and garden by a newly constructed wall are carport, woodheap and compost bins. A very large shed/ double garage houses a fully insulated storage room and roller doors access the original shed, now used as a large garden shed/workshop.
Stylish, elegant, comfortable, easy living is the hallmark of Spring Street Cottage. Whether you are downsizing, investing in Crookwell's flourishing B&B industry or looking for a beautiful work-from-home base in a vibrant country town, this beautiful property could well be the answer to your dreams.
