Last Listing description (July 2023)

This 2 storey building is one of Bourke's most notable, historic buildings and this sale presents a perfect opportunity to not only purchase but keep a piece of history alive. It has beautiful features and is one of the 2 standout historical properties in Mitchell Street.
The allotment of land was originally owned by the Pioneer T.A. Matthews with the building being erected in 1889/90 for Dr. Sides who used it as a medical centre and residence. The building was named after Mr. Towers, a chemist who worked with Dr. Sides.
The building has survived the 1890 flood and a severe fire. It has been suggested that the hastily erected extensions at the rear of the building were, in all probability built to cope with the ensuring typhoid epidemic that occurred after the 1890 flood. Succeeding doctors used the Towers Drug Company building until 1920.

The building has seen several uses since then. The main shopping centre changed from Mitchell Street to Oxley Street and in the 1960's the building was used mainly for residential purposes with the first floor, side verandah closed in for extra bedrooms. It was around this time that the rear extensions to form a separate residence would have been completed.

During the 1970's the first floor was used a coffee house and the front shop a hairdressers. At one stage the building was also used by the Bourke and District Historical Society as a museum and craft shop.

The building was subject to an interim conservations order which lapsed in 1984. In 1985 a Permanent Conservation Order was placed on the building by the Heritage Council.

Currently the building is used as, both accommodation and leased office space. The bottom floor (currently leased) consists of kitchenette, office and 2 large rooms one of which is a reception area and the second an open plan office. The 2nd floor includes 3 bedrooms (2 with front balcony access). Each bedroom has a TV and split system air conditioning. One of the bedrooms allows access to one of the most unique features of the property, a windows walk which provides a great place to take in the views of the township and river. Other rooms include kitchen, bathroom, storeroom, closed in verandah and rear balcony.

The building towards the rear of the property not only includes the residence with lounge, spacious kitchen, bedroom and bathroom but also 2 separate toilets, a laundry and storeroom. Between the 2 buildings is a large undercover, paved area and at the rear of the block is a large undercover carport able to store approximately 10 vehicles.

This investment opportunity not only lets you invest in some of Bourke's architectural history but also provides a very sound financial investment also with a duel income stream from long term commercial tenants downstairs and the upper level and rear building being run as a boutique accommodation business "Bourke Apartments" check it out online www.bourkeapartments.com.au .
This property is being offered including an extensive list of inclusion along with all the IP associated with Bourke Apartments.

This business is able to be run remotely with cleaning staff and handymen in place to look after and run the property and a fully automated online booking program in operation which could transfer with the purchase of this business.

Alternatively there is an opening to run the accommodation as a Bed and Breakfast for someone that is interested. There is real growth potential in the accommodation side of this business located in Bourke - The Gate Way to the Outback as Henry Lawson said "if you know Bourke you know Australia"
