Built in the 1950s, the weatherboard home was purchased 20 years ago by the current owners, a skilled tradesman and a horticulturalist who steadily embarked on a series of carefully considered renovations to create a functional and beautiful family home.

Rooms were rearranged to create a sun-filled north-facing open plan kitchen, dining and living area, with rich timber hardwood floors. French doors were added to open out to a full-length covered back verandah, the existing bathroom was fully renovated and a chic new black and white main bathroom added. While the entire home has been substantially upgraded for modern living, heritage features have been sympathetically retained, including an open fireplace in one bedroom and celestial circular bookcase at ceiling height in the master bedroom.

"Our aim was to retain the original features that were endearing to the home and blend heritage elements and modern features in a harmonious way," say the owners. "It's been a slow and carefully considered process. Everything has been done properly, including full insulation and new wiring and plumbing."

Extra touches for comfortable living abound. A walk-in wardrobe has been fitted behind the bed in the master bedroom, the new large galley kitchen with solid European oak benchtops , soft close draws and stainless steel appliances includes a walk-in pantry and home office area and an alcove has been built-in in the living area to hold a wall-mounted television with cupboard beneath to conceal the NBN modem and cabling. There's also an airing cupboard in the guest bathroom with a shelf for warming towels and rails for drying damp clothes. A solar hot water system and LED lighting throughout ensure savings on electricity useage. Skylights incorporating solar lighting have also been added in the main bathroom and hallway.

Outdoors, the gardens have been substantially replanted and include mature fruit trees and a dedicated vegetable garden plus a substantial potting shed that could be readily converted to a studio.

"The Berry area has beautiful soil," say the owners, "and the garden has been designed to enjoy in all seasons."

A particular joy for the owners, who moved to Berry from Sydney, has been the "real community feel" of the town. "Our girls grew up here and could walk to school and all their friends' homes safely. And everything's close at hand. We can walk into town and there are so many lovely beaches and the mountains to explore close by."
