Lilly Pilly - Tourist Rd, Beaumont
Offering total seclusion and tranquillity amid lush rainforest filled with birdsong, this five acre property is a sanctuary where nature's changing patterns enrich and enhance daily life. Accessed off Tourist Road, at the top of Berry Mountain, the long, meandering driveway leads to a peaceful, sunlit clearing and classic country homestead.
When we first looked at the land in 1985 it was love at first sight, says the current owner, a French-born artist. Not many people lived up here then and it was still a dirt road. Our friends in Sydney were concerned we were moving to a very isolated place.

The couple designed the cedar home with wide three-metre verandahs themselves and had it built by a local builder. When I first moved to Australia I was always looking for the perfect old Australian timber house but couldn't find it. So we bought this land and built it ourselves, says the owner. I didn't want it to look like it was built yesterday so we sourced old windows and French doors and incorporated them into the design. The house has a beautiful feel, with high ceilings and a lovely play of light.
High clerestory windows flood the interiors with natural light and allow glimpses of trees, sky and the moon and stars at night. Other features of the open plan home include wide blackbutt floorboards, a two-metre cast iron bath and slow combustion fire. There are two 5m x 5m bedrooms, a library/study and a very large upstairs attic bedroom with dormer windows. There is ample storage space beneath the house and two large water tanks ensure there is never a water shortage.
Surrounding the house are low-maintenance grounds studded with tree ferns. We kept the grounds very natural, says the owner, and have been careful not to introduce any exotics or have any pets to disturb the native wildlife.
The topography of the property includes flat grassed areas, a paddock, lush rainforest, a natural billabong that attracts wild ducks and a creek. This nurturing place is shared with an abundance of wildlife, including lyrebirds, rosellas, brush turkeys, swamp wallabies and wombats.
It's all about living in harmony with nature here. There's good fresh air and it's lovely to wake up each morning to the sound of lyrebirds. It's very contemplative but there's always something happening. It's a totally different experience to living in a city.
Though secluded, the property is far from isolated. I love that it's a beautiful drive to Berry, Kangaroo Valley or Jervis Bay, says the owner. Everything is close at hand and you don't have to go far to be somewhere beautiful. From just down the road there's a strip where you can look out either side of the mountain to the coast on one side and over Kangaroo Valley on the other. That's pretty special.
