Last Listing description (October 2018)

Perfectly positioned in one of Curtin's most marvellous locations, this character-filled four bedroom home is being offered for sale by the second owner who has enjoyed 35 years in this wonderful neighbourhood. The extraordinary residence has great street appeal with its established and colourful gardens, vast lawn areas and modernist construction. The light-filled home has an excellent floorplan with segregated living areas and appealing retro features like parquetry floors, raked ceilings and an abundance of timber-framed glazing. The split-level dining and lounge rooms share a cosy wood fire and lead through to the heart of the home with an updated kitchen and meals area boasting a Tasmanian oak breakfast bar and leadlight sky windows.
Originally built in 1966 as a three bedroom, one bathroom home with a single living area, the architect had cleverly designed and positioned the residence to allow for future extension for the growing family. The original owners took advantage of this in the mid 1970's when the home was extended to include an extra-large master suite with a dressing area and ensuite bathroom, as well as French doors leading out to the rear courtyard and gardens. There was also the addition of a timber-panelled family room that opens onto the covered entertainment space allowing separate living areas for both adults and children.
Situated within close proximity to local shops, schools, transport and the Woden Town Centre, this is an exceptional opportunity for buyers looking for not only a prime piece of Curtin real estate, but also a captivating example of mid-century modern architecture.

~ In the 1960's there was a coordinated effort led by government in conjunction with architects and builders to attract people to live in Canberra by promoting a modern and sophisticated perception of the city's housing. Now commonly referred to as mid-century modern, several features of this Curtin home are reminiscent of some of the designs from the time popularised by influential Australian architect Robin Boyd, who first came to notice in the late 1940's. Boyd became known for his design and promotion of well-planned affordable and functional homes incorporating modern architectural aesthetics. The architect made a collection of house plans available to the general public in association with The Age newspaper and he was also commissioned to design several major residential projects across Victoria and some prominent homes in the ACT. In the 1950's and 1960's, Boyd in partnership with Frederick Romberg and Roy Grounds, made fashionable what was then known as the post-war Melbourne regional style with long unbroken metal rooflines, raked ceilings and large areas of timber framed glazing. It is evident that aspects of this modernist style also found their way into several homes across Canberra's suburbs, including 23 Kennerley Street Curtin ~
